5 Secret Weapons for Your Career Change

5 Secret Weapons for Your Career Change Though switching careers has become much less stigmatized of late, that doesn’t mean you should do so flagrantly or without a plan. Add these 5Â  weapons to your arsenal before putting in your notice. Wielding even one can significantly increase your chances for career change success. 1. ClarityClarity of vision and purpose is key. It’s much better to start the career change process with an end in mind, rather than just an aimless idea. In other words: being ready to quit one job isn’t the same thing as being ready to start a new career. Before you initiate what can be an exciting, but challenging process, ask yourself two questions. First, what do you actually want? You know you don’t want to be in this job anymore, but where do you want to be? And then second, why do you want it? What about that job excites you and makes you want to pursue it?If you don’t have answers to these questions, take some time to take stock of yourself, your strengths, y our weaknesses, who you might know who could be useful or helpful to you in making the change, and then figure out what you’ll need to prepare to make it happen. Being clear about what you want and need to do in order to get it will help you develop a plan. Once that’s set in motion, all the work you put toward changing jobs will be productive and you’ll have the confidence of knowing you are moving in the right direction.2. BrandIn this age of social media, it is increasingly more important to have an online brand that is distinctive and unique and targeted to your industry and career goals. Take every opportunity you can to tailor your professional networking sites not just to your current job, but to the job you hope to attain.Try doing guest blogs and posts for websites in your field. Wherever possible, try to join the conversation that’s most relevant in your industry. Also make sure to put up a personal website that covers the information that would be on your resume, but in a way that sells you and provides context and personality as well as bulleted facts. Remember that every online space is an opportunity for you to show yourself in your best light and set yourself up to step into your new career.3. NetworkYour network is the key to your career success, both in your current job and wherever you’d like to end up next. Maintain the active connections you have, no matter where you go. And if you don’t have that many connections in the new career you’re trying to transition into, start building them through friends of friends and acquaintances of acquaintances. Brick by brick, you’ll build a powerful building full of contacts that can help keep you current and moving forward.Keep on top of trends in your field. Research the kinds of contacts you need to make, then put yourself in a room with them. Attend mixers and conferences. Get your business cards in circulation, and start accumulating a pile for yourself! Above all else, start figuring out who the top recruiters in your new field would be and begin reaching out to them on LinkedIn or other networking forums.4. Financial Wiggle RoomIt’s always good, when making a career change, to have a bit of wiggle room. A safety net, if you will. Just in case you need to take some time off work in the course of your career change. You might have to start lower on your new totem pole as well, and it’s best to be prepared to keep your current standard of living on an even keep through your transition. Step one: update your budget, finding ways to cut frivolous costs and make a plan to save more aggressively for the time being. Take on a side gig or two to build up your cushion. Having the money side sorted out will help take away some of the major stresses of the career change.5. TenacityAbove all else, your biggest secret weapon is a combination of patience and persistence. This can be a long and stressful process- much lon ger and more stressful than we usually budget for when making these initial decisions. Keep your spirits up, but keep in mind that you’ll have to work hard and be a bit gentle on yourself as you make your way from one career to the other. Stay focused and you’ll be sure to get there!

Job analysis project (rating system part) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Job analysis project (rating system part) - Essay Example It also tells how applicable such criteria in the performance of the task as it relates to the job. Standard deviation on the other hand tells how close or how far the actual performance deviates from desired performance of the task. Combining these two criteria will tell how the tendency of an SME to deviate from the ideal performance as it relates to the criteria of importance, frequency, difficulty and flexibility. A survey was conducted indicating the major tasks involved in the job. The criteria used to evaluate each task were frequency, importance, flexibility and difficulty. Frequency meant how often the specific task was done as it relate to the job. Importance is the level of significance of the task to the job. Flexibility on the hand relates to the responsiveness of the task to the job while difficulty is the level of complexity in doing the job. The tasks are rated from the scale of one to four with four the highest and one the lowest on the scale. The standard deviation shows the degree of deviation of the actual task compared to the desired performance with zero as the most desirable result as it indicate no deviation. The results being closer to zero indicate more desirability of performance where the farthest indicate the least desired performance. The result of survey indicate that there are three criteria in the job where deviation is very susceptible. Actual performance consistently varied from desired performance in the area of flexibility as the deviation is consistent across all tasks from scrutinizing documents to querying decisively about ambiguities in the text. Standard deviation on all task is 0.471404521. This would tell that flexibility is the number issue among proofreaders and suggests that proofreaders should be trained with flexibility as all respondents deviated from desired performance. The second is area of the task of a proofreader that has consistent deviation is difficulty. Except

Physical and chemical changes Essay Example for Free

Physical and chemical changes Essay Challenge #1 — The Penny Problem: The first challenge to complete is the Penny Problem. The radio station is giving the winner of this challenge a prize pack that includes tickets to see his or her favorite band in concert. To start off the challenge, the radio station has placed pennies in a cylindrical glass jar. Each penny is 0.75 inches in diameter and 0.061 inches thick. If the cylindrical glass jar containing the pennies has a diameter of 6 inches and a height of 11.5 inches, how many pennies can fit inside the jar? You must show all work to receive credit. So first I want to fine what the volume of the jar is so I am going to use or Cubed inches Now we know how much space we have inside the jar. Now we have to find the volume of the pennies. Now you will divide 325 by .33 and we find that there is a total of 985 pennies in the jar. Challenge #2 — Tennis Trouble: Now its time to move on to the second challenge called Tennis Trouble. The second challenge is to figure out how many tennis balls fit in a specially designed container. The radio station will give away a prize pack and a pair of front row tickets to the winner of this challenge! Each tennis ball is 2.63 inches in diameter. A sketch of the specially designed container is below. How many tennis balls can fit inside the container? How many more tennis balls could fit into the container if the container’s dimensions are doubled? You must show all work to receive credit. In order to find the volume of this container we are going to have to use two formulas. The first formula will be so we can find the volume of the cylinder. Now we have to find the volume of the cone And after doing that I find that Now all we have to do is add the two together and we will know the volume of the container. Now we have to find the volume of the tennis balls. In order to find the volume of a tennis ball we have to find the area of it. After doing that I am going to divide 87.9 from 5.43 to find how many tennis balls will fit into the container. So a total of 16 tennis balls would fit into the container. If the containers dimensions were doubled then the number of tennis balls would have probably doubled. Challenge #3 — Giant Gum: The Pharaoh Chewing Gum Company has decided to sponsor an additional prize in the radio stations contest. They are giving away backstage passes for the concert! Pharaoh Chewing Gum manufactures a new product they are trying to promote. The new product is a pyramid-shaped gum with a square base. In the spirit of the other challenges, the company has decided to place their pyramid-shaped gum inside a clear glass giant bubble-gum shaped sphere. Each piece of gum has a base measurement of 1 inch and a height of 0.75 inches. The glass sphere container has a diameter of 17.25 inches. How many pieces of Pharaoh Chewing Gum can fit inside the glass sphere? You must show all work to receive credit. Now to find the volume of the sphere we are going to use So the volume of the sphere is 51.8 inches Finally we have to find the volume of the pyramid gum. Now we go ahead and divide them by each other and find that a total of 207 pieces of gum fit into the sphere. Answering the Questions. 1. For the Penny Problem, how much empty space should exist inside the jar after being filled to capacity with pennies? Why doesnt this amount of space actually exist in the jar? There should only be enough room for there to be about 3 or 4 more penny’s but you would not be able to put them into the jar because the pennies are going everywhere and they jar is not made to form around the pennies. 2. Where does the formula for the volume of a cylinder derive from? Give an example and provide evidence to support your  claim. It derives from the formula of area of a circle the only difference between them is for the cylinder you have to what the height is in order to use the formula. 3. In the Tennis Challenge, a cone was used for calculations, and in Giant Gum, the formula for the volume of a pyramid was needed. Pick either the formula for the volume of a cone or the volume of a pyramid and explain where the formula you chose derives from? Give an example and provide evidence to support your claim. This equation is almost like the formula for the area of a circle crossed with the area of a triangle. The differences between them are that for a circle you don’t have to find the height and you don’t have a fraction and for a triangle you don’t use pie and don’t use the radius and the fraction is not 1/3 it is  ½. 4. In Tennis Trouble, the container used for the challenge is labeled A in the image below. If the container’s shape was modified to look like container B, what effect would it have on the capacity (volume) of the container if the dimensions remained unchanged? What theory or principle helps to prove your point? Nothing because they amount of space has not changed just the way it looks has and the theory that supports this is cavallies principle. 5. In Giant Gum, the gum is shaped like a pyramid. What shape do you think would best fit into the container (choose a shape other than a pyramid). Explain why the shape you chose was better and back up your answer with proof such as calculations and writing. I would thing that balls would best fit into the container because it is shaped as a ball. Also if they were shaped as a ball there wouldn’t have been that much space left in the sphere.

The Merchant Of Venice - Shylock: Villain Or Victim? Essay -- Merchant

Many people are villainous in the way they behave. Their villainous acts may be attributed to their desire to destroy others and in turn elevate themselves to a higher financial or social level. However, the root cause of their villainy may be a response to the treatment they have endured at the hands of others. In short, they have been taught villainy, rather than it being an integral part of their personality. In such instances, revenge can be a key motivator in inspiring them to act in a villainous way. It is on such occasions, where villains have themselves been exposed to villainy, that the distinction between villain and victim becomes blurred. Victims are usually characterised in the way that they are persecuted for circumstances, which are beyond their control for example their appearance. In plays and novels, the victim is sometimes a character included to highlight the prejudices and pre-conceptions of the social climate in which the play or novel was written. In the †˜Merchant of Venice’ it can be argued that Shylocks character undergoes a metamorphosis from villain to victim. However, in this essay I hope to discuss whether in fact Shylock can be defined as either villain or victim and to form an opinion of what Shakespeare intended. First we shall look at the aspects of the text that portray Shylock as a villain. We are first introduced to Shylock in Act I Scene iii where we learn of his usury. It is in this scene that Bassanio seeks Shylock out and asks to borrow money from him in Antonio’s name. Also in this scene do we learn of Shylock’s hatred for Antonio and the Christians: ‘ How like a fawning publican he looks! / I hate him for he is a Christian; ’ (Act I Scene iii) Shylock also displays elements of belligerence in his refusal to ever forgive the Christians. We also learn of his intent regarding Antonio’s life: ‘ If I can catch him once upon the hip, / I will feed fat the ancient grudge I bear him.’ (Act I Scene iii) Shylock also shows himself to be devious and cunning by hiding his hatred beneath a faà §ade of friendship in order to entice Antonio to become indebted to him, not just with money but with his life. Antonio is very naà ¯ve regarding the terms of the bond taking the ‘pound of flesh’ clause to be a show of friendship not hatred: ‘ The Hebrew will turn Christian: he grows kind.’ (Act I Scene iii) Perhaps he receives the terms... ...uted among his sworn enemies. Although Shylock pursues his revenge fervently he still has the audience’s sympathy because of the unfair and harsh punishment he receives. It strikes a modern day audience as grossly unfair that the severity of his punishment reflects not his crime, but his race. He is a victim of the Christians’ intolerance of other races and ideas. In conclusion, I feel that ultimately Shylock is a villain. The way he treats those he is close to, for example his daughter Jessica exposes his vindictive and ultimately evil character. He lets his lust for vengeance engulf all other aspects of his life and his complete lack of mercy towards Antonio renders him a villain in the eyes of the audience. We can only guess at the way in which Shakespeare intended Shylock to be portrayed. I feel that Shakespeare intended Shylock to be victim, he was created to challenge the pre-conceptions and ideologies of the Elizabethan era. Having said this, I feel personally that it is not productive for us to simply categorise Shylock as either victim or villain. Through Shylock, Shakespeare explores the way in which the line between the oppressed and the oppressor can become blurred.

Argumentative Essay Abortion Essay

Our world today is full of unsolved and controversial issues. Most of them relate to our morals, ethics and religion, thus creating a very strong yes and no, or good and bad side. Abortion has a very outstanding black and white side but also contains traces of each in the alternating colour. This shows that if you were to come to any kind of conclusion on abortion, there would still be a downside to it, and that is primarily why the world cannot agree on this sensitive and emotional issue. An abortion is when the pregnancy is ended so that it does not result in the birth of a child. It allows women to put an end to their pregnancies, but involves killing the undeveloped embryo or fetus. For this reason, it is a very controversial subject. Being pregnant and wishing you weren’t is probably the worst feeling a woman can have. Knowing that if you brought a child into the world and you didn’t want it, or you would have to give it up for adoption is such a disheartening way to start off, and you and the un-born child would be so much better off if you were to terminate the pregnancy and wait for a more appropriate time, or in the case of rape, put the past behind you and move on. When we hear of women having abortions, we seem to automatically think that she wasn’t careful enough, or she didn’t use contraception. We forget to stop and think about the other possible reasons, she may have accidentally become pregnant. Just forgetting to take one pill per packet can reduce it’s effectiveness. Condoms can tear or be forgotten, and emergency contraceptives like the morning after pill are not easily obtainable. 50% of women getting an abortion in Britain used some form of contraception when they got pregnant. This obviously shows that women are having huge problems with using contraception, and something needs to be done about it. This also means that we can’t judge people immediately. Women are still getting pregnant even though they use contraceptives. I think that women have the right to get an abortion if they tried to prevent the pregnacy. My thesis is: Abortion should be legalized. Arguments: 1. Personhood begins at birth, not at fertilization,. 2. Fetuses are incapable of feeling pain when an abortion is performed. 3. An association between abortion and breast cancer is unsubstantiated. Counter arguments: 1. Abortion involves killing a human being 2. Fetuses feel pain during the abortion procedure 3. Abortion increases the likelihood that women will develop breast cancer Refutation of the counter argument: 1. A lot of people have the counter argument â€Å"abortion is murder†. That’s not true, abortion is the termination of a pregnancy, not a baby. Personhood at fertilization, is not a proven biological fact. To think that personhood starts at fertilization is a religious belief, nor a provable fact. 2. According to Stuart W. G. Derbyshire, PhD, Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham (England), â€Å"not only has the biological development not yet occurred to support pain experience, but the environment after birth, so necessary to the development of pain experience, is also yet to occur.† 3. The National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have all refuted the reliability of studies claiming abortion can lead to a higher probability of developing breast cancer. 1. Is intelligence innate? Essay

For many years, there had been a debate over whether genes alone can determine one’s intelligence or whether the environment and training can increase one’s intelligence. Some scientists think that people behave as they do according to genetic predispositions. This is known as the â€Å"nature† theory of human behavior. Other scientists believe that people think and behave in certain ways because they are taught to do so. This is known as the â€Å"nurture† theory of human behavior. Intelligence can be employed to indicate the amount of knowledge available and the rapidity with which new knowledge is acquired; the ability to adapt to new situations and to handle concepts, relationships, and abstract symbols. Scientists have known for years that traits such as eye color and hair color are determined by specific genes encoded in each human cell. The Nature Theory takes things a step further to say that more abstract traits such as intelligence, personality, aggression, and sexual orientation are also encoded in an individual’s DNA. Therefore, it is argued that intelligence is innate. People are born with it. There are also beliefs that the more folds you have in your brain, the more intelligent you are as your brain contains more neurons. Intelligence can be inherited. This can be used to explain why people say that Jews are smart. According to adoption studies, adopted children have more similar intelligence scores than their adoptive parents who reared them from birth. Supporters of the Nurture Theory do not deny that genetic tendencies may exist, but believe that they ultimately do not matter. Our behavioral aspects originate only from the environmental factors of our upbringing. Therefore, intelligence can be increased or augmented if one goes through training. The importance of twin studies is evident if we look at the studies objectively, if intelligence is basically hereditary, identical twins who have the same genetic legacy. Jones’s study (1946) shows that there is a modest difference in the intelligence test scores of twins reared apart, and the more divergent the environments, the greater the difference. I believe that it is a combination of both nature and nurture. Intelligence can be increased by training, but how much it can be increased very much  depend on one’s innate intelligence. We are all born with a certain I.Q.. Some people may have higher intelligence than others. However, if both a high I.Q. person and low I.Q. person goes through similar training, they can both increase their intelligence, but it would be easier for the high I.Q. person to increase his/her intelligence. I feel that it is not possible for one’s intelligence to be solely determined by the genes. If this had been the case, we would be living in a scary world. Our intelligence would be decided once we are born, and there is nothing we can do to change it. We have to live with it for the rest of our lives. I believe our environment plays a part. We can only fulfill our genetic potential by first, optimizing our environmental factors. For example, people living in third world countries may be born with the same intelligence level as other people in first world countries. However, they do not have the optimum environment to realize their potential, thus they fare much worse than others in first world countries. Genes only serve as guidelines. The rest is derived from interactions with the environment. Individual intelligence and human behavior cannot be predicted based on knowledge of genetics and the environment. When something is considered determined, free will is destroyed.

The Combat Film essays

The Combat Film essays The war hero portrayed in these films is almost always representative of the common man. A soldier picked out of the masses with his every victory in battle a stepping stone to greatness. Masculine traits - aggressiveness, violence, an apparent lack of feeling - are often depicted to the extreme. In the WWII combat film the hero is depicted as the men who are heroes and who have been willing to sacrifice their lives for something larger than themselves. These films define war as a contemporary democracy vs. dictatorship, virtue vs. moral corruption. Basically WWII films were used to depict patriotism. These films had a clear agenda that was to emphasize, as a recruiting tool, and to depict the courage of our American soldiers. The films used to portray the Vietnam War had a decidedly different tone. These films, for the most part, came out a good time after the war began. By this time the unpopularity felt by the American public in regards to this war had gained momentum. Many people were suspicious of the government, their motivation, and the tactics used in this war. That general feeling of discontent and disapproval seeped into the films used to portray the war. In these films the audience is generally offered a view of a war that is exhausting, ugly, terrible, and largely meaningless. Survival rather than noble cause becomes the focus of a soldier's day. The majority of the films about Vietnam make it clear that they are claiming that there was no call to action, no clear and worthy goal to be pursued, and that society wasnt recognizing the sacrifice of Americas young people in the way that they were able to during. For the most part, the actual trials and tribulations of the soldier are the same in both types of films. It is the government that is condemned either subtly or outright, not the soldiers fighting the governments war. The issue of morality, in regards to the soldier is the same for bo...

6 Common Negative Thoughts And How To Combat Them

6 Common Negative Thoughts And How To Combat Them We’ve been there: in a terrible state of mind, while people keep telling you to think â€Å"happy thoughts.† It’s enough to drive you nuts. But hear us out: positivity and, yes, â€Å"happy thoughts† can actually have a major impact on your success in your career and your life- while negative thoughts, or in particular, â€Å"cognitive distortions,† can have a massively bad impact on both. Here are some strategies for how to identify negative thoughts and cognitive distortions, and how to overcome them. We hope you can free yourself of all that unnecessary shame, self-pity, fear, and resentment and get back to the good vibes.1. I don’t have enough time.No one really feels like they have enough hours in their day to accomplish everything they need or want to accomplish. But being busy doesn’t always have to be a source of stress. You’re making the most of life- and probably being much more productive. If you have too much on your plate, try simplifying your schedule a bit. Remember, you’re in charge of your own calendar. Then count your business as a blessing.2. I’m not enough.Impostor syndrome, and generally feeling you’re not as qualified as your peers, is very common. But just remember that you’re probably holding yourself to a much higher standard than you would anyone else. Give yourself a break. Step away from social media for a while. Stop comparing yourself constantly to others (and to others’ online avatars). And start focusing on what you’re doing instead.3. This is going to be a catastrophe.Okay, worrywart. â€Å"Catastrophizing† is a thing. The â€Å"what-ifs† are constantly plaguing you with horrible disasters and tragedies as the result of some of your simplest actions. Try to take a step back from your worries and remind yourself of some calming statistics. Don’t avoid life because you’re afraid it might be unsafe.4. It can only be either/or.Either I ace this presentation, or I’m going to be fired. Because I screwed up at that meeting, I’m never going to earn my boss’s trust. These are examples of polarized, or black and white thinking, and they’re not doing you any good. Remember that there is always middle ground, a grey area, and a chance to redeem yourself if you make a small (or large) mistake.5. That’s it- I’m doomed.Just because one thing happened that wasn’t great doesn’t mean that similar bad things will continue happening to you. And don’t make assumptions based on what you think might be going on. Say your boss talked over you in the meeting. Don’t leap to the conclusion that she hates you or that your job is in jeopardy. Try to imagine the thousand other reasons she may have had not to give you your turn with the talking stick.6. I’m a total failure.Life goes on. Even if you did something stupid or embarrassing, t he sting is not going to last.
